Process specialist services

Our process specialist services cover a wide range of different tasks. These include e.g. risk analysis like Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA), bottle necking and various specialized studies.

In Poland, we offered our process specialist services to be used in an extensive Hazop risk analysis on the start-up of the monochloroacetic acid plant (MCAA Plant). We had participated in the plant design from very early stages on so our knowhow on the process function gave valuable information to the risk analysis.

Energy

We have numerous of customers in the fields of energy production and forest industry. Typically, our works include different types of studies, investment applications, formulation of emission trading documents, other reports and permit applications, process and investment design, project management and profitability calculations.

We have given consultant services for numerous of project related to energy production and energy saving for our long-term customer Keitele Group. The most recent project covers the investments for flue gas scrubber, heat recovery and fuel belt dryer. The system can decrease the moisture content of sawdust, bark or wood chips or their mixture from 60% up to 10%. The maximum production of free energy is 45 % of the boiler capacity when the flue gases condense from 150°C to 25°C.

Chemical industry

The list of projects related chemical industry is long and wide. We have accomplished projects from pre-engineering to plant commissioning and startup including process engineering, simulation and procurement planning.

Circular Economy

We at Chemitec are developing new ways to minimize the amount of waste. We look for new refining processes for waste and side streams to utilize the primary material as efficiently as possible. We have both internal research and projects with our partners in co-operation.

One of the most recent projects has covered the development of a bioreactor for processing a food industry waste stream. Our solution converts a very problematic waste stream into a valuable product. Originally, this bioreactor solution was investigated in our office and for then developed in co-operation with Ecolution Oy. The initial method was tested with a pilot scale reactor in Finland. With reliable and promising results, it was possible to continue to the reactor scale up. Recently in the summer 2019, we celebrated the startup of the first full scale reactor in China.

Permits

The Finnish legislation regulates in various ways both the chemical industry and the energy production. To enable our clients to focus on their expertise, we can take care of the various environmental and chemical permits, bureaucracy of trial notifications, and emission trading documents including emission calculations. We have easy access to latest standards through our membership in PSK Standards Association.

In August 2017, the BAT conclusions for large over 50 MW combustion plants were published in EU, which launched a process of examining existing environmental permits. As part of the process, the existing environmental permit is compared to the BAT conclusions.

One of these studies concerned the Linnankatu district heat plant of Turku Energia that has four over 40MW oil-fired boilers. Since obtaining the environmental permit, the plant has had a number of significant improvements to decrease emissions and utilizing techniques listed in BAT conclusions. Even though the plant practices modern BAT, the official study compares only the permit to the current legislation. In the Linnankatu case, many aspects of the BAT conclusions may not apply the plant due to minor use.

Distillation

We have strong expertise in distillation processes. We have designed a number of very challenging separations, such as solvent (methanol, ethanol, isopropanol) recovery processes for CMC production plants. When the purity of the product is vital and there are no easy separations available, we have also found a feasible solution to draw the high-purity product (TMB) as side product of the column. We are also ready to utilize reactive distillation if needed.
